1 HYLOCITREA (YELLOW-FLANKED WHISTLER) Hylocitrea bonensis 14–15cm FIELD NOTES: Inconspicuous. Forages in the mid-storey and understorey, singly, in pairs or as part of mixed-species feeding flocks. H. b. bonthaina (1b) is found on Mt Lompobattang in SW Sulawesi. VOICE: Thin, high-pitched buzzy notes; also utters a loud, piping call. HABITAT: Mountain forest, especially moss forest. DISTRIBUTION: Endemic to Sulawesi.

2 MAROON-BACKED WHISTLER Coracornis raveni 15cm FIELD NOTES: Shy and skulking. Usually seen in pairs or singly, foraging from the sub-stage to the lower mid-storey. VOICE: A repeated, loud, explosive whip-crack call. HABITAT: Montane forests. DISTRIBUTION: Endemic to Sulawesi.

3 SANGIHE SHRIKE-THRUSH Coracornis sanghirensis 17–19cm FIELD NOTES: Forages in the middle and upper storey, also in dense rattan undergrowth and occasionally on the ground. VOICE: Song is loud and consists of repeated ten-second-long phrases; also a lisping chweep chweep. HABITAT: Lower montane primary forest and well-established secondary forest. DISTRIBUTION: Endemic to Sangihe Island, north of Sulawesi.

4 MANGROVE WHISTLER Pachycephala cinerea 17cm FIELD NOTES: Unobtrusive and sluggish; gleans insects from branches and trunks. Juvenile has rusty edges to wing-coverts and secondaries. VOICE: A loud, whistled oo-oo-oo-oo chew-it or similar; in W Philippines, utters a whistled peeee pur-purr chiaoonkk or peee pur chiaoonkk, the last note ending abruptly. HABITAT: Mangroves and nearby vegetation, forest, riverine vegetation, plantations and wooded gardens. DISTRIBUTION: Resident in Sumatra, Java, Bali, Borneo, the W Philippines and Lombok in the W Lesser Sundas.

5 ISLAND WHISTLER Pachycephala phaionota 16cm FIELD NOTES: Skulking. Forages in the shady understorey, singly or in pairs. VOICE: A loud weet-chuw-weeEEee, busy chup calls and nasal notes. HABITAT: Mangroves, coastal woodland, beach scrub, secondary scrub and plantations. DISTRIBUTION: Resident in the Moluccas.

6 WHITE-VENTED WHISTLER Pachycephala homeyeri 16–17cm FIELD NOTES: An inconspicuous bird. Generally occurs singly or as part of mixed-species feeding parties. P. h. winchelli (6b) occurs in the WC Philippines. VOICE: Various whistles, including oo-wichee, yump, yump-wit and u-wichee-u…; also a high-pitched wheeu tu tu tu or similar. HABITAT: Forests, from sea-level to mountains. DISTRIBUTION: Resident in the Philippines and islands off NE Borneo.

7 GREEN-BACKED WHISTLER Pachycephala albiventris 16cm FIELD NOTES: Shy, foraging quietly in the canopy or understorey; seen singly, in pairs or as a member of mixed-species feeding groups. VOICE: A loud, metallic peee or peee-wit, repeated frequently. HABITAT: Forests, from lowlands to high mountains. DISTRIBUTION: Endemic to the Philippines.

8 BORNEAN WHISTLER Pachycephala hypoxantha 16cm FIELD NOTES: Forages in the middle to upper canopy, often as part of mixed-species feeding parties. Captures prey by gleaning or during fly-catching sallies. VOICE: A whistled dee-dee-dee-dee-dit, the last note like a whip-crack. HABITAT: Montane forests. DISTRIBUTION: Endemic to Borneo.

9 SULPHUR-VENTED WHISTLER Pachycephala sulfuriventer 14–15cm FIELD NOTES: Encountered singly, in pairs or as part of mixed-species feeding parties; forages mainly in the mid-storey, on trunks or large branches. VOICE: A whistled wiwiwiwiwiwiuWHIT that decreases in pitch and increases in volume; also a short, staccato wheeu tu tu tu. HABITAT: Primary and secondary forest and forest edges. DISTRIBUTION: Endemic to Sulawesi.
